PKR is one of the most innovative poker rooms available on the internet today. It features never-before-seen-in-online-poker graphics, excellent soft competition, and tons of bonuses and promotions all the time. It also features its own online community for you to be a part of once you have an account there. Unfortunately, PKR is currently not open for US players to play in their real money games, but all other countries are welcome.
Unique is probably the best word to describe the PKR software. There simply isn’t anything even remotely comparable to it in the online poker world today. The PKR software is like the popular game the Sims but with cards and for real money. It’s a truly wonderful and engaging experience, one that needs to be seen to be believed. It is billed as the future of online poker, and this might not be too far from the truth.
The PKR download is available as a Windows and the Intel version of Mac OS X, so most users will be able to play. It makes extensive use of its systems 3D capabilities, so hardware requirements to play on PKR and total install time are unusually high for a poker room, and more akin to a relatively modern 3D game. That said, it will run on weaker system configurations, but you need good horsepower in the graphics department which means that most systems with integrated graphics, which run other rooms just fine, need not apply. The minimum PC requirements are a 1 Ghz+ Pentium equivalent processor, 512MB ram, 1GB hard drive space, any soundcard installed if you want to hear the excellent sound effects, Win2K+/XP+, 32MB DX9c compatible graphics card. The recommended requirements are 2 GHz+ processor, 512MB ram, 128MB DX9c compatible graphics card. For the Mac OS X platforms, minimum requirements are any Intel processor equipped Mac and above plus Mac OS X v10.5.7+ installed. You need 1GB free hard drive space available. The sole exception to this rule is the early Intel Mac Mini with the Intel GMA950 platform, which is unsupported by PKR software.
Getting the PKR download started is easy. Use the links on this page to download either the PC or Mac OS X version (the webpage will automatically detect which one you need) and run it. The PKR software setup will ask you for administrator authentication, and give you further instructions. An icon named “Play PKR” will appear on your desktop; all you have to do to get started is to double-click it.
Upon first run, the PKR software will download and install all of its necessary files, which are about 1GB total. This obviously depends on your internet connection, but on a 2MB connection at full speed it takes about an hour and a half to fully download everything and the kitchen sink. As the install starts, you are given the option to register your new account at PKR as well. While this total install time can be viewed as excruciatingly slow, especially when you compare it to that of just about any other online poker room, trust me on this one; it’s worth it, every damn megabyte of it.
You can also request a CD version which will be mailed to you. You should do this if, for any reason, your internet connection is really crappy (like frequent disconnects or you have an archaic 56KB connection), or for some reason you have metered internet billing.
Once installed, you will be asked to log in to enjoy the PKR software. You will be immediately greeted with the amazing graphics, with a rotating lobby as background. You will be in a MYPKR section of the lobby, which provides “Messages of the Day” which is like up to the minute news and information, you will also see your current avatar.
Avatars are an integral part of the PKR software, because you will be represented on the table (and in the casino and in games like deal or no deal) by your avatar. To customize your avatar in the PKR software, just click the “Avatar” tab in the main lobby, and it will take you to a sort of clothing retail store dress stand. In here, you can customize your avatar to your heart’s content; you can edit your avatar’s body, clothes, voice and even load up some chip tricks to execute on the tables. If you would like to stand out from the crowd, there are also options for you to buy a few of clothing and accessory items for your avatar with PKR points.
Once your avatar is ready and to your liking, it’s time to hit the tables. Clicking on the “Play” tab at the top of the main lobby screen will take you to the available games. The PKR software, aside from poker, also offers Deal or no Deal, European Roulette and a fully fledged PKR Casino.
On the Poker tables, the PKR software shines again. All the expected options are there, such as 4-color deck, auto-muck, show one card while folding or after winning a hand, etc. Since it is in 3D, with 3D animated players and dealers, the PKR software also offers you a host of camera options to follow the action. You will not see your hand all the time, but you will need to press the peek button to see your cards and remember what you have. Also, the PKR software is full of little touches, such as the ability to make up to 4 outfits for your characters to quickly dress them up, snow falling outside the poker rooms, Christmas tree’s when it’s that time of the year, how higher you play the more ballin’ the room you play in will be, etc. If you want a more complete rundown of the PKR software’s very extensive feature list, please have a look at our PKR Main Review.
The only downside to the awesome PKR software is that while the website is available in many popular languages, the software is available only in English. This may deter some international users, but to most it isn’t such a huge problem. It is also wise to beef up on your computer specs, because while the minimum requirements are very modest, to play PKR in all its glory you would need a good and recent computer equipped with a relatively decent graphics card.
